The PGA Tour is the place where all professional golfers dream of reaching. The best in the game compete week in and week out on the PGA Tour hoping to add their names to the list of most career wins.
So who tops the list of the most wins on the PGA Tour? Let’s find out.
Who Has Won The Most On The PGA Tour?
Who Has The Most PGA Tour Wins?
Currently, Sam Snead and Tiger Woods hold the record for the most PGA Tour wins with a total of 82 career victories.
Sam Snead’s winning career began in 1936 when he won the West Virginia Closed Pro by 16 strokes and ended in the mid-60s with his final win coming at the Greater Greensboro Open in 1965.
During that time, he was able to amass an incredible 82 tour wins which was unmatched until 2019, when Tiger Woods finally reached the number.
Tiger Woods’s first win came at the Las Vegas Invitational in 1996 having turned pro that year as a 20-year-old. He then went on to win the 1997 Masters by 12 strokes. Tiger managed to match Snead’s record in 2019 following a win at the Masters and Zozo Championship. This couldn’t have been done without exceptional putting, but also a long driving game.
Both players also enjoyed great success in major championships, with Tiger Woods currently holding 15 majors and Sam Snead collecting seven major titles.
Both Snead and Woods have enjoyed great careers (despite both players having to withdraw from multiple tournaments), displaying consistency and longevity, whilst being some of the best putters on the tour, and will go down in PGA Tour history as two of the best players to ever play the game.
Other notable names have also won a large amount of PGA Tour events such as Jack Nicklaus with 73 wins and Ben Hogan with 64 wins. However, the nearest player to Woods and Snead’s record who is still playing is Phil Mickelson who currently has 45 PGA Tour wins.
Will The Record Ever Be Beaten?
It’s very unlikely that the PGA Tour win record set by Tiger Woods and Sam Snead will ever be beaten.
With the standard of golfers playing on the PGA Tour today, achieving 82 tour wins is an incredibly difficult thing to achieve because it requires many years of being at the top of the game.
Of course, there’s a very real chance that Tiger Woods will be able to beat his record as he is still competing on the tour. However, injuries have held him back over recent years and he’s no longer able to play a full schedule on the PGA Tour.
But one thing I’ve learned about Tiger Woods is to never write him off. I never would’ve predicted he’d come back in 2018 and win the Tour Championship and then go on to win the Masters the following year.
Realistically, Woods is already top of the list and has the best chance of winning more than 82 times on the PGA Tour.
Of the current PGA Tour players, Rory McIlroy has a good chance of giving the record a go with over 20 PGA Tour victories already to his name. But compare this to Tiger Woods at the same age as McIlroy, he’d claimed 71 PGA Tour wins by then.
Final Thoughts
There’s no doubt that Tiger Woods and Sam Snead are some of the greatest golfers to ever play the game of golf.
It’s no easy feat winning once on the PGA Tour (most never do win), let alone 82 times. Will it ever be beaten? Only time will tell, but I don’t believe it ever will.
