Where Is Wentworth Golf Course?

Wentworth Golf Club, known for hosting the DP World Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, is located in Virginia Water, Surrey.

Sitting near the Surrey/Berkshire border, the club is about a 60-minute drive west of central London and is one of the most well-known courses in the UK.

The club also sits on one of the most expensive private estates in the UK, Wentworth Estate, which houses some of the most wealthy individuals, including some top professional golfers.

The club consists of three 18-hole golf courses, the West Course, East Course and Edinburgh Course all of which feature magnificent natural beauty.

The West Course and the East Course were both initially designed by Harry Colt in 1926 and 1924, with adjustments made by Ernie Els and others such as European Golf Design from 2005 to 2017 on the West Course.

The Edinburgh Course is a far more recent addition to the club, designed by the great John Jacobs, with assistance from Gary Player and Bernard Gallacher.

The most recognisable of the courses is the West Course, which hosts the BMW Championship each year, but has also hosted the World Match Play Championship from 1964 until 2007 and the 1953 Ryder Cup.

Previous winners include Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Seve Ballesteros, who both won it five times.

Famously, Wentworth Golf Club is known as the birthplace of the Ryder Cup, having hosted a historic match in 1926 which is recognised as the precursor to the Ryder Cup.

Who Owns Wentworth Golf Club?

Wentworth Club was bought by Bejing-based investment company Reignwood Group for £135 million in 2014.

Having purchased the club, membership numbers have been reduced and the fees have been increased.

Since the purchase, over £20 million has been invested into the club and facilities, including the driving range, changing rooms, health club and tennis courts. The clubhouse also saw a major investment of £13 million to showcase it as a luxury venue for golf.

The club now offers a world-class experience to any golfer lucky enough to get the chance to play or become a member there.

Can You Play Wentworth Golf Course?

As you imagine, getting a round of golf at Wentworth Golf Club is a far from easy task. Until 2014, visitors were allowed to come and play the iconic venue at a pretty hefty green fee price.

However, since the new owners took over in 2014, it’s become very difficult for non-members to get the opportunity to play.

Your best chance for how to play Wentworth is to know a member of the club, who’ll have a certain amount of allocated guest rates for a season.

Another method for getting a round in is to become an employee of the club, the DP World Tour or the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).

Both the DP World Tour and the OWGR have their registered offices at Wentworth Club, who’ll have an allotted number of green fees for staff members.

For a lucky few, there’s also the route of actually becoming a member of the club. If you know a member, are willing to wait a while, have approximately £175,000 for a debenture and can stump up a reported £16,000 in Wentworth golf club membership fees, you’ll have the chance to join one of the most exclusive clubs in the UK.

Of course, there’s also the chance for those good enough, to compete in the yearly BMW Championship on the DP World Tour. But that will consist of you achieving a playing status on Europe’s elite professional tour.

Final Thoughts

Wentworth Golf Club is one of the best-known and most exclusive golf courses in the UK, located in Virginia Water, Surrey.

It’s a club which has seen some of the best players in the game of golf pick up some of the biggest prizes in golf, but unfortunately, it’s a place that most golfers, just like Augusta National, won’t get the opportunity to play.
