So you’ve probably tried mini golf, but what about Topgolf? Even if you’ve never picked up a golf club in your life, you’ve probably heard of Topgolf.
It’s the new way of playing golf that’s taken the world by storm over recent years. But what actually is Topgolf?
In this article, we’ll learn a little more about Topgolf and give you a quick beginner’s guide on what to expect at Topgolf.
What Is TopGolf?
What Is Topgolf?
Topgolf is basically a large driving range which has lots of targets to aim for and includes a bar and kitchen.
Topgolf driving ranges have several dozen bays to hit from, usually spread out across multiple levels, which groups rent out by the hour.
The actual range has lots of giant dartboard like targets to aim for, all with different colours and sizes. The micro chipped golf balls each have a tracking device inside which helps you see where and how far the ball has gone.
Although there’s plenty of different games to choose from, the aim of the game is to try and score the most points possible. Points are achieved by hitting balls into the various targets, with each target worth a different amount of points.
Each bay has its own section of the driving range with various types of clubs to use.
Up to 6 players can be in a bay at once and it’s available to all ages, provided anyone under 16 is accompanied by an adult.
If you’re feeling hungry or fancy a drink, the bays have waiting staff on hand, ready to take your order and keep you fuelled and well-hydrated for your session.
Topgolf essentially brings together a golf driving range where you can work on your golf game, but also the social and fun element of a bar setting.
Like a bowling alley sort of vibe, but with golf clubs and balls instead of bowling balls.
From non-golfers to seasoned professionals, Topgolf is a game for every skill level to enjoy and potentially win at.
Which Clubs Do You Use At Topgolf?
The great thing about Topgolf is you don’t have to have your own golf clubs to be able to play.
Each bay at Topgolf has a selection of golf clubs to use, from shorter irons such as a 9 iron to longer clubs like a driver.
The clubs also come in two different weights and length sizes, the blue lighter ones or the black heavier options.
If you wish, you can also bring your own clubs to use at Topgolf. If you’re a good golfer, it might feel better to hit with your own clubs as you’ll be used to them already.
The clubs available at Topgolf are a little basic and designed to accommodate lots of different golfers, so if you’re looking for a high score, taking your own golf clubs might be worthwhile.
Having said that, it’s totally fine to not have your own clubs – you don’t take your own bowling ball to the bowling alley after all.
What Are The Topgolf Targets?
The driving range at Topgolf is full of targets which you can score points by hitting the ball into.
The closest and easiest target is the line of red targets which sit at about 25 yards from the bay you hit off. The red target is worth the lowest amount of points but is most accessible for all skill levels.
The yellow target is next and sits about 50 yards from the hitting area. Then there’s the green target, orange target, blue target and white target. You’ll earn points every time you hit the ball into one of these targets.
The further you move up the range, the more points earned. The closer to the centre of the target players aim, the more points are on offer.
Safety At Topgolf
When played correctly, Topgolf is a fun way to spend an evening. but the fun part certainly isn’t getting hit in the face with a golf club.
It’s for that reason you have to be a little cautious whilst you’re having fun in the bay. Here’s a few key things to remember to keep you and everyone else safe while you’re at Topgolf.
Don’t cross the red line
Golf clubs are designed for hitting golf balls, not people.
If you accidentally get in the way of a player whilst they’re swinging the club, it’s not going to be a very pleasant experience.
It’s for that reason that Topgolf requires all other players to remain behind the red line in the bay at all times whilst someone else is hitting balls.
Never walk onto the driving range
As someone who’s been hit with a golf ball before, I can confirm it’s not a great feeling.
If you’re hit by someone else’s golf ball, it can do a serious amount of damage. Therefore, never try and retrieve your golf ball once it has gone onto the driving range area.
A few other key safety rules to remember:
- Stay away from the safety nets
- Keep back from the edge of the bay
- Dont aim at the ball collectors
- No Happy Gilmore’s
- Never lean over other bay dividers
