Running The UK’s Best Indoor Golf With Richard Harrison

I recently got the chance to visit The Golf Groove in Wimbledon and after a brilliant few hours of golf, I knew I had to speak to the brains behind it all.

Indoor golf facilities are a growing part of the game and fast becoming a hugely popular activity for every level of golfer.

Following my visit, I got the chance to sit down with the Founder, Richard Harrison, to find out more about his history in golf and what made him want to start a facility like The Golf Groove.

This conversation is part of the “EEE Golf Interviews” – exclusive chats with great people and businesses from within the golfing industry.

EEE Golf Interviews – Indoor Golf with Richard Harrison

Hi Richard! Tell us a bit about your golf career so far.

I’m very fortunate to have learnt the game in Lytham St Annes, turned pro in 1993 and won my 5th event as a pro.

My PGA career took off when I joined the RAC in Epsom and met many wonderful members at a five-star venue. Every day was pure joy and pride.

My best score as a pro is 69.

Tell me a bit about The Golf Groove.

I love golf, love coaching, love introducing the game to new golfers and have always invested in technology for coaching as I really enjoy the results it brings.

I approached some close friends, whom I first met 30 years previously at the RAC with the concept and received the promise of investment “as long as it is among the best in class”.

Hopefully, we achieved that!

Richard from The Golf Groove

What separates The Golf Groove from others in the industry?

We complement golf in our area in a very different way: 18 holes in 2 hours, no restrictions for ability, no off-putting stuffy club rules, open to everyone and very family friendly.

Our bays are full each day with R and A members, beginner golfers, professional golfers, county players, first dates, groups of friends having fun and plenty of corporate entertaining.

We have many people who come here just for the food, cocktails and lounge bar!

What’s the best part about running The Golf Groove?

It’s great being free to innovate and having the chance to meet old and new friends every day.

Seeing people enjoy the very best elements of the game of golf; sociability, challenge and fun.

What are your future plans for The Golf Groove?

With our investors and partners, we intend to welcome all manner of golfers and non-golfers to our venue and scale.

Golf events at The Golf Groove

Have you always been in the golf industry?

Yes, starting as a 15-year-old YTS trainee at a local golf club.

60 hours a week for £25 a week pay in 1988! Loved every minute.

Favourite golf tournament you’ve played in?

Pre-qualifying for The Open Championship as it’s a glimpse into the big time for a club pro.

Where’s the best course you’ve played?

Pine Valley for awe, Carnoustie for the challenge, Royal Lytham for sentimental reasons, St Annes Old Links as it is home.

And your favourite type of golf course?

Bleak windswept, brutal links courses when it is raining. Heaven.

Best memory in golf?

Watching Seve win in 1988 at Lytham from the clubhouse.

And finally, what’s your dream fourball and where are you playing?

My dad and my brothers at Meyrick Park, a public course in Bournemouth, like we did as kids on holiday (my kids, wife and mum would join too to slow everything down and make it more fun!)

Big thanks to Richard for having a chat with us about his golf business.
