I Think It’s Time To Turn Pro

Welcome to The Weekly Slice.

Let’s talk golf.

Tour Roundup

PGA Tour

64 out of 64.

That’s the absolutely ridiculous number of putts holed from inside 7 feet by Taylor Moore, the eventual winner at the Valspar Championship.

The American picked up his first win on the PGA Tour with a one-shot victory over Adam Schenk (what a name for a golfer!).

The final day was full of drama, with both Jordan Speith and Tommy Fleetwood in the mix. Sadly, a cold putter on Sunday prevented Tommy claiming his maiden win in the US.

And how about this shot on the last hole, when you’re also trying to win your first tournament:

This week the tour heads to Austin for the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play.

The event, which is being scrapped by the tour, features 64 of the best golfers in the world (excluding any LIV players) and is one of my favourite tournaments in the season.

Defending champ Scottie Scheffler will undoubtedly be tough to stop. But my pick for the week is Jordan Speith. He’s coming off a good week and loves Match Play.

DP World Tour

200 tour appearances.

That’s how many attempts it took Matthew Baldwin to claim his first DP World Tour victory.

The 37-year-old Englishman ran away with the victory after a final round 68, leaving him 7 clear at the top.

The tour stays in South Africa this week for the Jonsson Workwear Open.

My pick for the week is another Englishman and 4 time DP World Tour winner, Andy Sullivan. He’s won twice before in South Africa and looks to be finding some form.

The World Of Golf

BRNR Mini Driver

Ahead of The Masters in a few weeks, Taylormade has teased a new mini driver for players to use.

Augusta is a place where all sorts of shots are required and the top players are always looking for equipment that will give them an edge.

The 11.5 degrees, 300 cc driver will look more like a large 3 wood, similar to the original version – the SLDR Mini.

A Load Of Old Ball

Following the announcement a couple of weeks ago, Taylormade has launched a survey asking golfers what they actually think of the proposed plans to limit the golf balls pros use.

The key questions include:

Do you agree with the changes?

Do hitting distances need to be reduced for tour players?

Is it important for you to play with the same equipment as top pros?

The company has refused to comment yet on what they think about the changes, unlike others such as Titleist, but it will be interesting to see what the majority of everyday golfers think.

What’s In The Bag

Here’s a look at what last week’s Valspar Championship winner had in his bag en route to his first win.

Ed’s Golf

  • Current Handicap: 0.8
  • Best Score in 2023: 68 (LVL)

Finally a good round of golf. I think it’s time to drop everything and become a full-time golfer… Ok, perhaps not.

A very sloppy double bogey killed off the under-par round and just the 0.1 off the handicap, but still, a good day’s work.

Here’s the numbers for that round:

  • Score: 68 (LVL)
  • 3 Birdies, 13 Pars. 1 Bogey, 1 Double
  • Fairways Hit: 7/13
  • Greens Hit: 11/18
  • Putts: 27
  • Up and Downs: 5/6
  • Sand Saves: 1/1

Something Useful

Shot shaping is a great skill to have when you’re out on the golf course.

Here’s a great video going through the technique for a high, low, draw, and fade golf shot:

Something Funny

A classic from the World Match Play. Poor old Stephen Ames…
