Golf, But Quieter?

The Weekly Slice

Welcome to The Weekly Slice.

We’re the birdie on 18 to win by 1, but in newsletter format.

A big hello to our new members.

Here’s our quick roundup of what’s been happening in golf.

Tour Roundup

In the week which saw the (pretty dismal) return of LIV Golf, the PGA Tour and DP World Tour were doing what they do best.

Comebacks, playoffs and all the drama you could wish for.

PGA Tour

Chris Kirk picked up his first win since 2015, having battled with alcohol issues for a long time.

Having led for most of Sunday, an agonisingly close 2nd shot on 18 would end in a watery grave and a place in the playoff with rookie Eric Cole.

A birdie on the first playoff hole was enough for Kirk to win, in what was a pretty heartwarming success story.

Thoughts go to Cole for this painful end to his best finish on the PGA Tour to date:

The tour stays in Florida this week for the Arnold Palmer Invitational at the magnificent Bay Hill.

Back to the best fields again for another of the tour’s ‘special events’, with a prize pot of $20 million.

My pick for the week is Sahith Theegala. He’s yet to win on tour, however, he’s got the game to do it and at 66/1, he’s great value.

DP World Tour

India played host to the DP World Tour last week, with Marcel Siem coming out on top.

The German hadn’t been in the winner’s circle since the 2014 BMW Masters, but a final round 68 was enough to get the job done in New Delhi.

I can’t really tell, but I think he enjoyed this one…

Another good week for fellow countryman Yannik Paul who managed back-to-back 2nd places, following a good previous week in Thailand.

The tour takes a break this week before heading to Muthaiga Golf Club for the Kenya Open.

The World Of Golf

PGA Tour Following LIV

Last year there was outrage at the thought of having no-cuts in professional golf. The new LIV Golf Tour was heavily criticised for their attempt to change the game.

So what has the PGA Tour decided to do? Limited fields and no-cuts.

But as long as the sponsors are happy it’s all good right Rory?

Are Mastercard really caring about a top player that’s 20 shots off the lead on Sunday afternoon? I’m certainly not.

What do you think about pro events without a cut? Let me know your thoughts.

LIV Qualification

The new season of LIV kicked off in Mexico last week and it’s safe to say I wasn’t blown away with the coverage.

And I wasn’t the only one who turned off early. Just 291,000 tuned in on Sunday afternoon to see the climax, around 8 times less than the final day of the Honda Classic.

The tour also announced the introduction of a qualification tournament, relegations and a whole host of player exemptions from Asian Tour leaders to top amateurs.
